Given that I am attempting the 2011 Mongolia Bike Challenge, my first major multi-day endurance mountain biking event, I thought it was pertinent to come up with a few solid tips and strategies for completing the race to the best of your abilities. It is hoped that this post will be useful to other mountain bikers who are thinking about doing their first multi-day stage race.
Mutli-day endurance mountain biking events are becoming increasingly popular such as the BC Bike Race in Canada and Cape Epic in South Africa, just to name a couple. Multi-day endurance mountain bike racing has to be one of the toughest disciplines out there simply because mountain biking is like an individual time-trial and you have to be self-sufficient and mentally you have to be strong. I have talked to a number of experienced mountain bikers to glean some worthwhile tips and strategies to share with you, namely Craig Johns, Cory Wallace (Kona Factory Team) and Radek Tuma who has competed at Cape Epic.

New Zealand’s Kris Gemmell, a man with four ITU World Cup wins and 16 World Cup podiums and a $50,000 2nd place at the 2010 Hy-Vee ITU World Cup, won his debut Ironman 70.3 against a strong international field at Singapore Sunday. Gemmell’s better swim (race-best 27:44) and James Cunnama’s better bike (2nd-best 2:02:49) left the two men starting the run together. By the end, Gemmell’s ITU-honed, race-best 1:13:40 half marathon bested Cunnama’s second-best 1:14:24 run by just enough to give him his 49-seconds margin of victory in winning time of 3:50:56.

K-Swiss athlete, Hsieh Min Ya laid her exciting talent down in the water and on the roads of Kaohsiung to take her 3rd Triathlon title leading from start to finish. At the tender age of 16 years old, Hsieh showed composure to produce a dominant performance over premier Taiwan female triathlete, Sally Wang (Yi Wen).
The men's race was a total contrast to the women's race with controversy and a 3hr protest finally awarding Tom Wei (Chen Chun) the Elite men's title on his 26th birthday. The leading 10 athletes were sent the wrong way starting the run which resulted in some athletes running nearly 900m extra.
1200 athletes lined up for the first triathlon race of the year in Taiwan. The growth of the sport was prominent with competitor numbers twice than the previous year. There was alot of atmosphere leading into the event with the Navy including alot of athletes racing in both as individuals and teams. They brought their cheer squads and a great environment for athletes to excel.
Hsieh Min Ya made some great tactical moves early in the swim and found a great group to swim with. She used her strength as a swimmer to move ahead of the experienced New Zealand triathlete representative, Tanya Lee-Parker. Coming into transition, Min Ya had a 20 second lead on Tanya with some young up-and-coming triathletes not too far behind.
K-Swiss athletes Mark Hsieh (Wen Hao) and Sam Hsieh (Shen Yen) lead from the start with two good swimmers hanging on. Mark and Sam were both wearing the BLUESEVENTY helix wetsuits in the 20 degree waters and they were showing everyone the benefits of some great training during the off-season. After 500m Mark, only 15 years old, surged ahead and swam superbly to lead out of the water with a 30second advantage of Sam. The field was well spread out coming into a very long transition (around 800m)
Starting in the second wave, Michal Bucek (Slovakia who lives in Hong Kong) led by nearly 90seconds coming into transition and was on a mission to catch the younger athletes 5minutes further up the road. He rode and ran well to finish top 10 overall.
Onto the bike and Min Ya showed that she is not only just a good swimmer, but has also developed some great riding skills and strength on the 5 lap 40km cycle circuit. In the draft-legal race Min Ya took advantage and worked well to hold wheels of stronger athletes. She put time into Tanya and was holding off a strong surge from Sally who found herself down more than 4 minutes behind starting the cycle. Near the end of the cycle Tanya had found her zone and closed within 30 seconds of Min Yan.
The men's race was heating up as Sam caught his younger brother Mark and they cranked up the pace to increase their lead on the second pack by 15-20seconds per lap. Wang Hao Xiang, Lee Choi Yen, Hsieh Han Lin and Chiu Wei Chiang (John) lost their 30 second gap on leading triathletes Tom and Max Wu (Kuan Jung) within the first lap. The second pack at one point swelled up to more than 20 riders. Sam and Mark continued to power ahead as the second pack found it difficult to coordinate an attempt on catching the front duo. This large pack were disadvantaged with slow cornering and so many people to pass on the 5 lap circuit. On the fourth lap Sam had a flat tire when they were nearly 3 minutes in front of the chase pack. Fortunately another athlete stopped and gave Sam his front wheel and he was back on his way losing 1min 30seconds to the main chase pack. Mark stay composed and rode well to enter transition still with a 2 minute lead on the fast runners.
Min Ya was striding well and showing that a winter focused on building her stamina and speed was all coming together. Her 2011 slimmed figure allowed her to control the race as Sally chased hard. Sally was finding the pace difficult as she hasn't trained so much in recent months due to focusing on her Masters Studies. Tanya, meanwhile had dropped out after the cycle as she is rehabilitating an injured calf muscle. A very competitive athlete, she wasn't enjoying watching the race from the sidelines, but is smart enough to know that SIngapore 70.3 in 2 weeks time is more important and that letting the leg fully heal was important. Sally made in-roads into Min Ya's lead until the last 2 laps of the 5 lap 10km run, when Min Ya put in a last surge to put the nail in the coffin. Min Ya jubilantly crossed the line 2min 45sec in front of Sally. 都郁婷 finished 3rd for her best performance to date.
Mark was enjoying the lead on the run unaware that he and the other leading 10 male athletes had been sent the wrong way. They were turned around the athletes at different points on the course, but by this time some athletes had run nearly 900m (Sam). The energy gone into catching athletes in front and then being told they had run the wrong way caused alot of frustration and confusion among the athletes. Wang took advantage of the situation and cleared away with Tom chasing frantically. Max and Hsieh Han Lin were running well, but were eventually caught and passed by Sam, Mark and some other athletes that had been sent the right way. Wang held on to cross the finish line first, with Tom second, Wang Yin Jhih 3rd and Sam 4th. Some heated discussions after the race led to a protest. The ten athletes involved in being sent the wrong way had the opportunity to speak and show how far extra they had run. Finally the race officials awarded the win to Tom Wei, Wang Hao Xiang 2nd, Sam Hsieh 3rd and Mark Hsieh 4th.
It was unfortunate that a new volunteer accidentally sent the athletes the wrong way. It was shaping up to be an absolute cracker of a race with the fastest triathletes in Taiwan starting the run all withing 2minutes of each other. I know the athletes understood that the race wasn't fair, but they realise that the race organisers did their best in sorting out the issue after the race. It was exciting to see alot of the young athletes stepping up early in the season and we are all excited about the show-down in Miaoli in April.

Perfect 10 for Brown, breakthrough for Warriner
Legendary endurance athlete Cameron Brown made it the perfect 10 in less than perfect conditions at the 27th Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand in Taupo today. The 38 year old Aucklander produced another faultless and commanding display to become the first triathlete in the world to win the same Ironman race 10 times.
It was a typically calculated performance from Brown, who broke away from main rivals near the end of the bike, engulfed leader Scott Curry from Canada early on the run to win in 8:31.07 on a day of continual rain, finishing ahead of fellow Terenzo Bozzone and Switzerland’s Mathias Hecht.
While it was 10 times for Brown, it proved a rookie story of real emotion for Northland’s Samantha Warriner, who won for the first time only 14 weeks since undergoing a heart procedure to correct a racing heart rate.

Well done to everyone who competed at the North Coast Cycle race during the weekend. It was great to see so many athletes out racing and enjoying a good time.
Race Results www.cyclist.org.tw
As usual there were many crashes which scattered the field in this race. This is due to being the first race of the season for most cyclists and people aren't used to riding in packs at race intensity. Also you have new cyclists joining the peloton and you add the fact that everyone is fresh and edgy. Its important to practice race like conditions so you are ready for all the excitement on race day.
Get used to riding with your handlebars close to someone elses. When getting close use your elbows to protect yourself.
Also practice drafting with your wheel within half a wheel width of the rider in front. Rather than looking at their wheel, get used to watching through their hips. You can judge your gap off their hips and also see what is happening in front of that rider.
React smartly. brake only when required and feather the brakes. If you need to stop quickly (should only occur if avoiding a crass)then make sure you shift weight back on seat as you apply the brakes.
